More
About
the Harney
Mansion
Union
General
William
Harney
was
one
of
the
best-known
military
figures
in
America
at
the
time
of
the
Civil
War.
He
had
already
served
in
Florida
during
the
Seminole
War,
then
fought
the
Sioux
Indians
out
west
in
1855
&
1856,
but
his
role
in
Missouri
during
the
volatile
time
before
the
Civil
War
almost
changed
the
course
of
history.
General Harney purchased the mansion in Sullivan in 1872, several years after the war, as a summer home. The house had been built in 1856 by local physician Dr. Alanson W. Leffingwell. Harney added to the house, duplicating the original structure’s design and material, and used the mansion as a summer retreat from St. Louis until 1884, when he moved to Florida, where he died in 1889. The house remained in the Harney family until 1896, after which it changed hands several times. In April 1984, it was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. But by the early 1990s, the structure was in disrepair. In 1998, the Friends of the General Harney House formed to try and save the structure and have been working to restore it ever since.
Over the
years,
there
have
been
many
eyewitness
reports
of
anomalous
moving
light in
the
mansion,
as well
as
full-figured,
glowing
apparitions
that
have
been
seen in
the
windows.
Footsteps
have
been
reported,
as well
as
smells
of pipe
tobacco
and a
lilac
perfume.
Others
claim to
have
been
touched
by
unseen
hands in
the
house,
as well.
Some
researchers
have
called
this
"one of
the most
haunted
spots in
Missouri".

lucky
